Task: Conrad Construction was tasked with a complex building project. The project involved the construction of a semi-circular building, designed to be shaped similar to an eye. The closed ends of the building added to the complexity of the project. This was a difficult job as the building was shaped like an eye. Not circular, semi circle with closed ends which made it very hard to build. Overview: Conrad Construction was approached by an existing architecture firm from our network. We had worked with this firm previously and they were confident of our ability to finish their complex project. The project involved the construction of a new Anglican Church building at their premises in Watsonia. In bringing their designs to life we constructed their semicircular building. This new building included the new presbytery and links to their existing opportunity shop. It included a kitchenette and the construction of some parking spots around the building. Difficulties Faced: The designs provided by the architect were innovative, artistic and complex. There were no angular lines. Every wall was curved and off – centre. This was not a standard construction project and required extra steps in the planning process. It was important that the Conrad construction team ensured the construction fit in with the existing buildings and was accessible to the Church community. We had budget constraints and a tight deadline. The nature of the block meant there were additional constraints faced. We had a very limited amount of space to work in which did make things difficult at times Solution: By ensuring open and regular communication with the church, with clear signage across all construction sites we were able to ensure everyone’s health and safety on site – whilst also ensuring that any disruptions were kept to a minimum. The end We were able to provide the Church community with an innovative design that they were incredibly happy with. It included the new Presbytery and connections to their Opportunity Shop. Result: Conrad Construction were able to bring the architect’s vision to life with a building that was visually appealing and practical. Despite the complexities we were able to ensure that the project was completed on time and on budget. The architect was happy with the work we completed and we have since worked together again.
